To be honest, I didn’t expect there to be as many cute and talented canine actors as there were in the movie, thinking that they were going to be background “props” with very little involvement and screen-time. But, I was happily mistaken. Sure, the human stars, John Cusack and Diane Lane were wonderful (as always) and their interaction with other supporting humans like Christopher Plummer (who’s come a ways from playing a Klingon!), Elizabeth Perkins and Stockard Channing was amusingly delightful, but the movie was stolen by the likes of Mother Teresa. No, not that Mother Teresa! Mother Teresa, a Newfoundland that provides unconditional devotion to Diane Lane’s character in contrast to the “complications, drama and pretense” associated with the human relationships in the movie. Mother Teresa was actually two female Newfies named Molly and Mabel that were both selected and trained by renowned animal handler Boone Narr, with head trainer Mark Harden and the team at Boone’s Animals for Hollywood (see Buzz’s “Dogs Do That” article on Boone’s Animals). But it wasn’t just Mother Teresa and there were dogs of all shapes and sizes throughout the film. All-in-all, Must Love Dogs is a TWO-PAWS-UP movie that I strongly recommend to all my four or less legged friends. Meanwhile, gotta run, I heard there’s a casting call for cute Pomeranians! Ciao for now!
